What this is
Is the Malahat Open? is a free, single-purpose site that answers one question for BC drivers: is the Malahat (Highway 1 between Victoria/Langford and Duncan/Nanaimo) open, closed, or delayed right now. It presents DriveBC's official data as a single glanceable answer, refreshed every 5 minutes. No accounts, no clutter.
Who runs it
Is the Malahat Open? is built and maintained by Scott Mitchell in Victoria, BC.
I live on the south Island, where the Malahat is the road home. Watching people try to work out whether it was open before a commute — checking one camera, then another, then a map, hunting for an answer that should take a second — is why this exists. One page, one answer, so you can decide whether to go.
How the status is determined
Status comes from DriveBC's public Open511 API, polled every 5 minutes. Events are filtered to the Malahat corridor and classified on two independent axes: an acute status — open, delayed, closed, or avalanche control — which drives the banner, and a chronic state — work zones or winter conditions — which shows only as a badge and never changes the banner colour on its own.
Construction is treated as chronic by default. It only escalates to a delayed banner when DriveBC states a delay of 20 minutes or more and also reports an actual lane restriction. Those soft escalations are then checked against live TomTom drive times: if real-world travel time is running less than 10% above typical in both directions, the escalation is suppressed. Traffic readings older than 30 minutes are discarded rather than trusted.
The guiding principle is simple: the banner must never contradict the webcams. When confidence is low the site prefers showing open with a badge over a speculative delay — but any full-closure signal always wins, regardless of confidence.
That classification is our reading of DriveBC's data, not DriveBC's own wording. Driver reports on the homepage are supplementary to the official feed.
Accuracy and corrections
This site reports what DriveBC publishes, so it is only ever as current as the official feed. It cannot see conditions DriveBC has not reported yet — a fresh crash, a new patch of black ice, or a slowdown that hasn't been posted will not appear here until it appears there. If you spot something wrong, please tell us at hello@isthemalahatopen.ca and we'll correct it promptly. In an emergency, official channels and emergency services take precedence over anything shown here.
Part of RoadsBC
This site is part of the RoadsBC network of free BC highway status tools — see every major route at a glance. It is one of eleven BC highway and ferry status tools in the RoadsBC network, built on an archive of 10,787 DriveBC closure records dating back to 2013.
